Low Cholesterol Diet
July 17, 2008
Low cholesterol diets are becoming more and more popular in the world today for many reasons. The main reason is health concerns. We live in a world that is full of cholesterol, yet companies are just now starting to lower cholesterol in their ingredients and additives.
The main concern today is that people’s health over all has drastically declined. Congested arteries full of cholesterol lead to strokes, heart attacks and even more invasive surgeries to correct those congested arteries. There is not one organ that is more important in the human body then the heart. This is why we need to take care of it and when we are a little high or even borderline on our cholesterol levels, we should do whatever it takes to get them into a healthy level for our own body to survive and feel healthy.
Here are some low cholesterol foods that can be consumed without the cholesterol overload. These can help many different areas of the body, not just your heart!
1% or lower milk and milk products
Lean meats
Fish
Shell fish
Skinless poultry
Whole grained foods (breads, pastas, etc.)
Lots of fruits
Lots of vegetables
Nuts
Now that doesn’t seem too hard right? A lot of you are probably thinking, I already consume those types of products. However, do you ONLY consume those types of products and produce?
There are also theories on foods that lower cholesterol naturally. Here is a simple list that has been combined.
Soy Proteins
Nuts
Oats
Barley
Fruits
Vegetables
Flaxseed
Olive oil
Fish
The one down fall from going to a unhealthy happy high cholesterol diet to a low cholesterol healthy diet is eliminating fried foods, processed foods, and foods full of preservatives. This can be a major bummer for some people that live off of fish, but it’s usually fried shrimp, or love salads, but their dressings are loaded full of preservatives and sugars.
Try steaming your meats, veggies, and other fish type foods. Boiling can be done, but be cautious not to boil out all the nutrients of your vegetables. Grilling is a great source for your meats and fishes; vegetables in a simple foil packet brushed with olive oil and a squeeze of lemon and thrown on the grill are wonderful!
You don’t have to go dessert free either. The internet and local book stores are full of wonderful recipes for low cholesterol desserts. Also, sugar free Jello’s, puddings and even sorbets, sherbets and some ice creams state they are low in cholesterol or cholesterol free.
Bakeries around the world are creating different breads, pastries and other goodies that are using whole grain flours for cholesterol low diets. You would be surprised how good they actually are. Visit your local bakery and ask questions, or go to a natural foods store and walk through their bakery area. Most breads, pastries and treats are marked with their cholesterol content.
Going cholesterol free or even starting a low cholesterol diet isn’t the end of the world, it’s just a change in your lifestyle, and we know how hard that can be. Take the time to educate yourself, ask questions, talk with your doctor or cardiologist about support groups, or have them recommend a cook book, recipes.
