Losing Weight with a Low GI Diet
It is a pertinent question to ask what GI diet is and what it has to do with your weight or your losing weight. A low GI diet is good for your body. However, it is important to know what makes a low GI food.
Most foods give you energy through various types of sugars. If you rate all the foods on a one to hundred scale based on the impact they have on the blood glucose level almost two hours after they eaten, you would find that different foods kick up your blood glucose level differently in the same given period.
Among these foods are some simple carbohydrates that would push up your blood glucose level much faster than the other foods. Some other foods that you may call complex carbs, include some fruits and vegetables that will give you a slow and steady hike in your blood glucose.
They will not cause the crash that you would see happening in the case of simple sugars. This slow rise in glucose levels is better for your body, because it maintains your energy level and reduces the risk of many diseases that might create an imbalance in blood sugar levels.
The problem with a drop in blood glucose level is that, if it falls dramatically and suddenly, the body would suddenly feel hungry. As a result, you overeat, which is unhealthy.
On the other hand, if your blood sugar levels remain normal and constant, you feel full. Therefore, it is better to maintain a good blood glucose level so that you can avoid any gain in weight; doing so might actually help you to lose weight.
On the other hand, if you have high blood sugar levels, your insulin level might go up. That makes your body store fat, and it also does not allow you to lose any weight.
Therefore, it is important to use this concept for your diet and weight loss. You have to learn which foods are low GI, as compared to those foods that are high GI.
For example, you can avoid baked potatoes and have sweet potatoes instead. Your GI number in this case is cut in half. Try to have these low GI foods for at least two major meals, and also to eat snacks that are low in GI.
