Losing Hair: Causes and Prevention

July 3, 2009

womens-hair-lossHair loss is a common problem among men and women. We tend to take our hair for granted only worrying about it when we start losing hair. Each hair contains a primary protein called keratin, which is responsible for keeping our hair healthy.

Our hair is attached to the scalp with the help of follicles, which are buried into the skin. The hair as such i.e. the outer layer comprises of dead skin cells.

Hair loss can be hereditary and attributed to the genes. It can come from either side of the family and may also skip generations.

Hair loss is also referred to as alopecia. Other causes for hair loss could be over medication, stress, change in hormones, mental disturbance or a poor diet.

An intake of Vitamin C in the form of citrus fruits like orange, lemon, vegetables like parsley, tomato, broccoli, green peppers or in the form of supplements help to reduce hair loss.

A capsule of Vitamin B complex is a good supplement. Brewers yeast is also a major source of Vitamin B. Protein rich food like fish, eggs, cheese, tofu, soy products, nuts, wheat germ, and beans help arrest hair fall.

Chinese superstition is that hair loss is caused due to poor blood circulation. So they treat the organs related to that i.e. the kidney and liver with fleece flower root, mulberry fruit, and wolfberry fruit.

Stress is a primary reason for hair loss with the current generation. Yoga, meditation, massage, and other relaxation techniques are helpful in calming the mind and reducing stress and tension.

Natural products for the hair also help in reducing hair fall. A shampoo made of four tablespoons of thyme boiled in water for ten minutes is particularly good for treating dandruff, which causes hair loss.

Apply this mixture onto hair and leave it on for an hour before washing it off. Another recipe for preventing hair loss is to beat two egg yolks in half a cup of water and apply it to your hair. After five minutes wash your hair using vinegar in water for the final rinse.
