What is lip cancer and its cause?
Lip cancer is a cancer that is formed from the tissues of the mouth or lips and includes almost all areas of the lips and mouth. The exact cause of lip cancer is unknown, but most doctors believe that those who drink a lot of alcohol and use a lot of tobacco products are at great risk for lip and oral cancers.
What are the signs and symptoms of lip or oral cancers?
The most common symptoms of lip cancer are the following, but are not limited to: a person having white patches in either the lip or mouth or around the lip or mouth, having a mixture of red and white patches around the mouth and/or lips, having red-colored patches around the mouth or lips, having a sore on the lip that will not heal, having bleeding inside or around the mouth, having some loss of teeth, having considerable pain or difficulty when swallowing, having difficulty wearing any denture products, having a lump on your neck and having earaches.
How do you know if you have lip cancer?
A doctor or dentist can do tests or exams to see if you have lip or oral cancer or another illness. During the oral exam, the doctor or dentist will check all areas of the mouth, including the lips to see if you have any sores or lumps that are inside and outside the mouth and lips.
If there abnormal areas that are shown in the mouth, then a procedure, called a biopsy would be scheduled and performed at a later date.
What are the treatments for this cancer? Well, the most common treatments for lip cancer are surgical procedures, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and speech therapy. If you are diagnosed with oral cancer, you should always get a second opinion and talk with a doctor about the best ways to treat this illness.
