Turkey is a Eurasian country that spans from the Anatolian Peninsula to Thrace. It is known as the Republic of Turkey. It encompasses western Asia across to the Balkan area of southeastern Europe. The capital of Turkey is Ankara and it is the largest city in Istanbul. The city of Istanbul reaches across two continents.
Because of its location, Turkey is home to many cultures and traditions. Turkey is neighbored by eight countries including Bulgaria, Greece, Iran, and Syria. It is also surrounded by many bodies of water including the Mediterranean Sea in the south, the Aegean Sea in the west and the Black Sea in the north. Turkey’s government is a combination of democracy, secularism, Unitarianism, and constitutional. Turkey was founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1923. It is a member of many world organizations such as the Council of Europe, NATO and the G20 industrial nations. Turkey became a member of the Council of Europe in 1949, NATO in 1952 and the G20 industrial nations in 1999. The country joined the European Union in 1963
Turkey is predominately Islamic and the primary language is Turkish. Residents of Turkey also speak Kurdish, Dimli and Azeri. Their currency is known as the New Turkish lira.
Turkey spans across Europe and Asia. The land in Europe is known as Thrace while the land that occupies Asia is known as Anatolia. Turkey is steeped in biblical history. It is thought that Noah’s Ark made its way to Mount Agri which is the highest mountain in Turkey. Turkey has many bodies of water. Its largest lake is called Lake Van.
The Asian region of Turkey known as Anatolia was settled by Greek soldiers known as Ionians. It is the home of the Classical Greek Ionic column. Turkey is mysterious and miraculous. Two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World call Turkey home. They are the Temple of Artemis and the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus.
The country’s largest city of Istanbul was formerly known as Constantinople. It was the capital city of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires.
Turkey has contributed many products to the world including coffee and cherry. The country is also agriculturally self sustaining. The lands produce about 9,000 varieties of flowers.
