Lactose Intolerance
December 27, 2008
The inability to digest milk or its products is known as lactose intolerance. It can be troublesome for people who want to live free of dietary hassles or for bodybuilders, as they depend on milk for protein.
Deficiency of an enzyme in the intestinal stack causes lactose intolerance. Lactose, a particular sugar found in milk, can only be absorbed with the help of lactase enzymes. People who lack the enzyme can’t digest lactose, resulting in discomfort.
70% of the world population is a prey to lactose intolerance to some degree because they are not supposed to have milk after a certain age or they are not supposed to have animal milk.
Problems caused by lactose vary from individual to individual. The mildest cases suffer from gas problems, while the severe ones suffer from abdominal pain and diarrhea. However, the most lactose intolerant people can still have a cup of milk a day.
A study has shown that even lactose tolerant people can digest only 90% of milk and its products. This means that even healthy people are, in some way or the other, affected by milk. All this does not prove that dairy products are bad, but it reminds us that milk is not as healthy as we believe it to be.
People of cultures that usually drink a lot of milk are less prone to lactose intolerance, where as people who traditionally do not drink milk are easy prey to this condition. Asians, Africans, and Mediterraneans often suffer from lactose intolerance, where as people of northern Europe, like Poles and people of German descent have strong lactose tolerance.
How to spot lactose?
There are tests available which help to spot lactose. Following tests are done in hospitals or clinics:
Hydrogen breath test: this test studies the hydrogen present in the breath. If lactose is not digested, then it ferments, goes into the blood stream, and releases hydrogen via lungs.
Stool acidity: this test examines stool acidity which shows whether a person is lactose tolerant or not.
Treatment
Enzyme pills: – For people who have mild lactose problem, there is not much need for medicines. Just watching over milk consumption is enough. But for people who have severe lactose intolerance then enzyme pills can help prevent the problems associated with it.
Enzyme drops: – these can be taken without any prescription also. Just a few drops in milk can reduce 70% of lactose content.
