There are probably a lot of people who have never even heard of the Koi tattoo, let alone thought it was a very popular design in tattoos. So what is it all about? Koi is a Japanese carp that is a very colorful fish and resides often in ponds and in fountains. But it is not for the beauty of the fish that people are permanently branding themselves with it, it is for the meaning.
The meaning can mean different things to different people, and depending on the culture you are brought up in; the meaning can be taken literally or figuratively. It is said that the Koi can climb up waterfalls and secure a place at the top. Once at the top, if a Koi is captured it will bravely await its fate it is secure in its destiny. The old legend describes this colorful fish as climbing up the great falls on the Yellow River. At the top of the Yellow River Falls was a point dubbed Dragon gate. Once the Koi made it to this point, it would then be transformed into a dragon.
The Koi has been known to represent both masculine properties and positive qualities and earned a meaning of advancement and aspiration. It is because of this meaning, that many people find themselves drawn to the beauty and design of the Koi and so choose to symbolize their beliefs in form of a tattoo.
It is especially popular in Japan during their festivals and celebrations, and adorns many beautiful flags and decorations. Some view this majestic fish as having the ability to represent bravery, and has been a popular tattoo and symbol for Japanese bravery for quite a long time.
Whatever your reason for being interested in a Koi tattoo, whether it be for the meaning, or for its unmatched beauty, there are many designs and ways to customize it. One design can depict the Koi in its journey up the river, and other designs show the Koi becoming a dragon. It simply is up to you what you want the Koi to mean in your life. Some choose to have it represent a particular place in their lives that they be in, whether it be searching and discovering, or attainment and achievement. It can mean a lot of different things, but there is no doubt that it is symbol of beauty and bravery.
