Kitchen decorating ideas
January 1, 2009
Kitchen forms one of the most important rooms of any house. This is the place where we often spend our time with the family and this is the place where informal socialisation takes place. Without a kitchen, any home would be incomplete.
Having said that, it is also true that the kitchen is also the most difficult room to decorate. We can hardly come up with ideas to place our stove and dishwasher. It can be quite a task, especially with all the new and latest appliances and stylish hardware available in the market.
However, you do not need to fear if you have kitchen decorating to do because here are a few tips that you can follow and be clear about how to go about decorating your own kitchen.
Select the right wood for the right look
If you do not want to be adventurous and go for the standard classical look then you should use oak wood. However, fine-grained woods such as cherry and maple give a contemporary look to the kitchen.
You can also do some mix and match with different woods and textures to create an interesting look. Textures will also add depth to the room.
Get the shape right
You can go for the tried and tested traditional kitchen, which is utilitarian or even in an open space including the dining room or living room with it.
A U-shape is considered to be the best and most preferred because it allows you to make the best use of your workplace. L-shape is another popular one to go with and so are galley-shaped kitchens and island kitchens.
Go for slick appliances
Stainless steel appliances look great and give a stylish finish. Silver and gold dinnerware surely is for the grand look.
Cabinets and counters selection
Glass cabinets are great to show off all the nice china you have. You should have proper cabinet space and also leave space enough to accommodate your cooking range, ovens, dishwashers and sinks.
Counters will bear most of the workload of the kitchen. Therefore, they should be made of durable and beautiful materials. You should remember that you would need to clean them often so go for easy-to-clean material. You can go for granite, slate and marble slabs. Tile mosaics are also a good option.
Get proper flooring
Choose the proper flooring for the kitchen, which either blends in or matches with the look of the rest of the house. Tile floors give a distinct look. However, you should keep in mind the issues of heat because it will get too cold if not heated underneath.
You can go for bold colours in kitchen flooring. However, these are quite expensive, so you might want to stick to the traditional neutral colours. You can use effective lighting to decorate your kitchen.
