Its In The Mind
October 24, 2008
Psychosomatic (or psychophysiological) illness is a stress-related disorder that results when the mind struggles to cope. It is the mind’s way of informing the body of a problem that requires attention, which makes it difficult to diagnose.
EFFECTS
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome is a stress related illness that affects twenty percent of adults in the United States, and is characterised by abdominal pain and discomfort. It results from irregular contractions of the stomach and colon. Such irregularities alter the body’s natural absorption of food, and leads to gas, bloating, nausea and diarrhea.
Acne
According to researchers, prevalence of acne increases during times of stress, due to an increased sebaceous gland secretion of sebum, signaled by testosterone increases. Sebum then clogs pores and leads to breakouts.
Immune System Breakdown
Stress inhibits proper function of the immune system, while stress hormones result in overwork of the immune system, when such is not necessary. Thus, when the body is invaded by pathogens, it is incapable of reacting at optimum speed and efficiency, leading to infection.
Eczema
Eczema is a persistent skin inflammation, characterized by patches of dry, red, itchy, and flaky skin. It is a result of the immune system’s response to stress hormones, produced under high stress levels.
Behaviour
Due to the resultant increase in testosterone produced with the onset of stress, and the fact that testosterone is systemic, behavioral changes result. High testosterone levels result in a surge of energy, a shortened attention span, and impulsive judgment, which together affect aggression, irritability, and ferocity.
SOLUTION
Since psychosomatic illness is caused by stress, it can be treated and avoided by reducing stress levels. Although therapy and medication are effective in the fight against stress, natural methods such as exercise, rest and relaxation, and involvement in sport and hobbies, have been proven to suppress the disorder.
Because psychosomatic illness is caused by mental challenges of the sufferer, due to heightened stress levels, stress management is imperative to the amelioration and avoidance of the illness; and avoidance of the illness is important to mental and physical health, since it affects all aspects of life, both directly and indirectly.
