Is Toning Necessary

Most women don’t know what a toner does, so they skip the step entirely. A cleanser cleanses, a moisturizer moisturizes. What does a toner actually do? The simple answer is that it restores your skin’s natural pH balance. The normal pH balance skin maintains is about 5.5, while the water’s balance can be as high 9.5.
When you wash your face with water, it can send your skin into a frenzy as it tries to regain its normal pH level. Toner restores this balance immediately, calming your skin, and enabling moisturizers to do their work better.
Finding the right toner for you is important. Stronger toners will both clarify and exfoliate your skin, completely removing oil, dirt, and dead skin. These toners, however, often contain alcohol.
This can reduce the impact of oily skin for a while, but the ultra-drying properties of alcohol prompt your skin to produce even more oil, increasing the likelihood of further acne breakouts.
A lighter, alcohol-free toner is the safer option, but everyone’s skin reacts differently. Try out any regimen for at least two weeks before switching to something new. Look for a gentler, moisturizing, but not exfoliating toner for normal to dry skin.
Rosewater is an amazingly effective natural toner. This gentle, moisturizing toner will help balance your skin’s pH level and keep your face looking smooth and fresh. Simply splash it onto your face when you’re done washing.
Toners that exfoliate need to be applied with a cotton ball, while toners that moisturize need to be applied directly to your face. Your bottle will last longer if you pass on the toners that need cotton.
If you must use cotton, remember to be gentle when you apply the toner. If dirt or any residue shows up on your cotton ball when you apply your toner, it’s time to switch cleansers, because the one you’re using isn’t doing its job.
Only use toners after cleansing your face. It’s not a cleanser; don’t try to use it like one!
