Is There any Link Between Eczema and Peanut Allergy?
Currently it has been noted that there seem to be a link between eczema and the development of peanut allergy in babies. Up to about 20% of babies with eczema stand the risk of developing peanut allergy by the time they are two years old. Peanut allergy is a potential threat on the life of a baby. Today, in the UK, one in seventy children has a peanut allergy. What then should new mothers do to prevent their children from developing this allergy?
Why Peanut allergy is a problem
Modern guidelines show that babies who did not have peanut allergy will not develop it in the later part of their childhood. But, what is amazing is that peanut allergy is on the increase. Mothers are completely at loss as to what to do; whether they should totally avoid peanuts in their children’s diet or it should still be an integral part of it.
Any solution?
A research is currently under way at one of London’s hospitals, the Evelina Children’s Hospital at St Thomas’ Hospital. These questions are among the major questions that the research is trying to answer. This is a ground breaking research. This research is being led by a world expert in paediatric allergies, Professor Gideon Lack. It is a randomised and controlled study which will involve 480 children noted to be high risk children with either eczema or egg allergy, or both. The study will take about seven years to conclude.
There are two approaches, one of which each child will be randomly given to follow. Those in the avoidance group will follow a diet that is totally free of all peanut containing foods until they are three years old. Parents of those in the consumption group are to give peanut snacks that are appropriate to their children’s age to them three times a week.
The future of peanut allergy?
The aim of this study is to redirect public health policy towards the prevention of food allergies and to help scientist find necessary treatment targets in their quest to find cures for children who are already suffering from peanut allergy.
