Is Genetically Modified Food Blessing Or Curse?
January 8, 2009
Nowadays most people are habituated to eat genetically modified foods. But many of us do not know whether these foods are safe or dangerous for our health. As genetic engineering is still in the primary level, there is very little opinion available about the genetically modified foods. So, we should try to know something about these types of foods.
First of all, we should know what genetically modified food is. Historically, people are altering food grains by choosing seeds from other plants for bullish production to meet the increased demand of food. So, they are creating hybrid crops by crossing them with wild relatives of the same group. This process manipulates and can improve specific plant properties but production of the crops increases tremendously. These crops are called genetically modified foods.
These types of foods certainly have great advantages, such as herbicide endurance for which the weeds can not weaken them. These types of crops plants are designed to resist powerful herbicides. Genetically modified crops plants have the ability to tolerate cold because they added genes from cold-water fish. Tobacco and potatoes are these types of food grains.
They are pest resistant too. These engineered plants can resist and repel the insect drastically keeping the environment free from pollutants. Genetically modified food crops have more nutritional contents than their ancestors. ‘Golden Rice’ engineered by Swiss Federal Institute of Technology contains many kinds of vitamins which benefit the people of third world whose main food is rice.
On the contrary, it is a risky business regarding health because the genetic traits begin to spread to other organisms freely. As the scientists have a little control over gene transfer, any alteration and mistreatment may fall on human health and environmental features.
In 1989, because of genetic modification of foods, 37 people died and more than 1500 were disabled permanently in the USA. This type of food increases the risk of human breast, colon and prostate cancer by 500%. These types of foods cause not only the disease like cancer, but also birth defects and degenerative illnesses.
Genetically modified foods are risky for the environment too. The ability of these types of crops plant to resist weeds, even fight back pests affect other organism of the environment. 20,000 acres land of Monsanto was ruined when hybrid cotton was cultivated there.
There are some ethical problems regarding genetically modified foods. This is an act to outdo God, which is strongly prohibited by each religion. Human beings are the creation of God but they are exercising to be God by doing this. That’s why there is an outcry all over the world against genetically modified foods.
Now, still we have the time to think over if we should continue to practice this or stop doing it.
