Is Chinese Food Healthy?
December 27, 2008
While this may seem to be a foolish question to some, it is a question that needs to be asked. It is a common belief that Chinese food is generally healthy. Chinese food also happens to be a favorite. However, the sad fact is that although the original Chinese food may be healthy, the American version of it is far from healthy. It is loaded with fat, cholesterol, sugar and salt and we could do better to avoid it.
However, if you are too big a fan of Chinese food to altogether avoid it, you can at least choose the healthier option.
Egg roll or spring roll
The choice should be spring roll. Egg roll has fried meat, eggs and veggies encased in a deep fried dough. You definitely want to avoid that. Spring rolls have lesser calories and you can go for the steamed option to go healthier.
Fried Dim Sum or Dumplings
Dim Sum in Chinese means ‘touching your heart’ and it will touch your heart when you realize how bad they are for your heart. Dumplings are the healthier choice here because they are generally steamed and not fried. However, take them with a light fish sauce and vinegar instead of the peanut butter sauce, which will make them as bad as the dim sum.
Wonton or Prawn Crackers
The wonton is fried and is also stuffed with meat. This can be no choice if you are looking to your health. The prawn crackers, though a bit high in sodium will do a lot less damage to your heart and your love handles than a wonton.
Pork Chopsuey or Sweet & Sour prawns
This will surprise you that this is America’s own Chinese dish because you will not find it in China. It is fried and with all the oil for frying and the red meat, it is definitely a no-no. The prawns definitely make a healthier choice here, with the little fat.
Tofu with mixed vegetables or stir-fry vegetables
Tofu does not ensure health, because in this dish it is deep fried and the sauces used are also salty ensuring a rise in your blood pressure. Stir fry vegetables usually has steamed rice and fresh veggies. This makes it a winner on healthy Chinese dishes.
Beef & Broccoli with garlic sauce or Beef in Black bean sauce
Some people see broccoli and go for it, not withstanding the fact that it contains far more amount of beef making it salty and a definite no-no. The black bean sauce saves this dish lowering its fat content.
Kung Pao chicken and chicken balls or Teriyaki Chicken
All the nuts in the Kung Pao chicken make it high in fat. Chicken balls are deep fried and hence, no healthy choice. The Teriyaki chicken is a healthier choice among these.
House fried rice or steamed rice
This should be a no-brainer for you. Definitely steamed rice is the way to go.
Almond cookie or fortune cookie
The almond cookie has 4.5 g of fat in one cookie and so not a healthy choice, while the fortune cookie with a lot less fat will definitely raise your fortune.
Bubble (Pearl) Tea or Green tea
The bubbles in the bubble tea are tapioca balls that add a lot of fat to the tea. So go for the green tea. It is much healthier and will help you stay thin.
Go for it the right way
Now that you know that all Chinese food is not good, you will definitely be able to make a better choice the next time you go out for some Chinese cuisine.
