Is Age Reversal Possible With Skin Care Creams?
July 1, 2008
There are countless skin creams and lotions on the market claiming their ability to combat the signs of ageing. However, Chris Griffiths, a Professor of Dermatology at the University of Manchester says despite the huge resources invested in researching the fountain of youth, most anti-ageing remedies are little better than expensive moisturisers.
He believes that the only exceptions are sunscreens with SPF 15, which not only protect but help to reverse the damage caused by the sun. Creams that contain retinoic acid and were developed for treating acne have also shown their ability to fill out a blotched and wrinkled skin. At a conference on ageing, Professor Griffiths further stated that giving up smoking and covering up in the sun were the most effective measures to prevent premature wrinkles. The effects of natural ageing, which vary from person to person, are aggravated by environmental effects, including sun exposure (photo-ageing), smoking and, possibly, a high- fat diet. These leave the skin with extra melanin, the pigment that turns it brown, and less collagen, the substance that gives the skin its strength and elasticity. In contrast, natural ageing reduces rather than increases the level of melanin and causes only a slight loss of collagen.
Professor Griffiths says in skin natural ageing doesn’t manifest itself until one is really very old. Most skin problems owe their appearance due to photo-ageing. So if you can avoid sun exposure you can keep your skin in pretty good shape. Microscopic examination of the skin shows it has the capacity to repair itself after sun damage, as longer as it is not subjected to further assault from the sun. Using a high- factor sunscreen can therefore create circumstances in which the natural process of repair can begin. Further, retinoic acid’s ability to help repair skin damage was accidentally discovered when middle-aged women who were using the cream to treat late onset of acne, found it also reduced their wrinkles.
However, the secrets of youth is to choose one’s parents carefully as genes influence how rapidly one ages, to stay out of the sun, wear a hat or use a high-factor sunscreen, avoid smoking, avoid animal fats and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables (skin- damaging free radicals in the fats are mopped up by anti-oxidants in the fruit) And, of course, using a basic moisturiser or a cream containing retinoic acid (only available on prescription) or the less effective retinol (available over the counter) play their part in helping keep wrinkles at bay.
But, as science advances, scientists and dermatologists believe that skin creams can turn back the clock by erasing wrinkles and fading away old age spots. While, that may be, one finds natural home remedies do a better job of age reversal than many miracle creams on the market. With consumers demanding that anti-ageing cosmetic products be tested before marketing, generally, there is no proof that mass-marketed anti-ageing creams can reverse the signs of ageing.
