Integrating Interiors With Exteriors
August 8, 2008
Not many homeowners are inspired to integrate their exteriors or garden with their interior, and vice versa. But, it makes sense to do so as terraces mean outdoor garden areas have become extensions of the home and are an ideal introduction to your garden. It is a room that has the best view in the house.
A merger of garden and interiors, one can or should apply the same interior design principles for terraces or garden rooms, as they can be called. A well-decorated terrace should have lounging space, a dining area, design pieces and clever lighting. Except for a roof, a terrace has all the necessary features of a room one can play with, including entrances, flooring, walls and furniture pieces.
Treat walls or fences the same way as you do interior walls, painting them or even adding texture by covering them with bamboo screens. Terrace floors can’t obviously feature carpets; however incorporate brickwork, stone slabs, tiles and wood.
Select garden decor that will give your outdoor room style and character. Create a sense of fluidity by continuing your interior style. If, your interiors are modern and contemporary, use edgy materials such as metal and concrete canvas for sculptural planting. For interiors favouring natural materials, use materials like hardwood and bamboo for your terrace.
Garden furniture can be of wrought iron, cedar or teak, which are all excellent choices for patio and garden furnishings. And while, style is crucial, durability and functionality must also constitute in your choices. Unlike indoor furniture, terrace furniture has to brave bleaching from the sun, drenching from the rain and strong gusts of wind. Keep in mind that although many patio sets claim to be durable hardwood, there are some cheap hardwoods that are pretty low-grade and won’t last as long as one hopes.
After selecting your furniture, floor and wall / fence coverings, it is time to focus on outdoor lighting. Lighting can change the entire feel of your terrace or outdoor room with a view of your garden. Go for subdued, ornamental, warm or bright lighting outdoor lighting, most of which is made to endure all elements of the weather, featuring insulated and weather-resistant components. Select from a few styles, such as, freestanding lamps, table lamps, globe lamps, lanterns, umbrella lights, string lights and ground lights. Shop for what appeals to you and is practical, as well.
Create focal points in your outdoor room and adjoining garden by placing a range of planters filled with beautiful seasonal flowers or design-led sculptural trees. Ideal for decorating, they bring the garden into your outdoor room and soften its look. Blending your interior and exterior seamlessly is important, so think of your garden room as a place where your home and garden come together.
As well, you can use your outdoor room as a dining area for holding barbeques, or a play area for the children, you can even use it as a work station for your laptop if you work from home.
