Installing a Car Seat for a Child
June 17, 2009
Once a car seat has been selected it can be quickly installed. However, there are a few matters to keep in mind. These are listed below.
Follow the Directions
Before using a car seat, it is imperative that parents read the included instruction manual and the child safety section of the vehicle’s operation manual.
Fix the Seat
Children below age 12 should be properly seated, preferably in the center of the backseat. A rear facing car seat is not advised for those backseats with a fold-down armrest. A child in a rear facing car seat should never be placed on the front seat with a passenger airbag.
Sitting Position
Babies should always ride in a semi-upright, rear-facing position until they weigh 20 pounds, are over one year old, and have reached the height and weight limits of convertible car seats. This secures the baby’s head, spreads’ the impact along the baby’s back, and prevents injuries to the head and spinal cord. Generally, babies can ride in car seats facing the rear until they are three years old.
The forward-facing car seat should be in a fully upright position, with shoulder harnesses properly worn as per manufacturer instructions. The spacing between the seat belts helps determine whether the center of the backseat is the best place for the child’s car seat.
Ideal Seatbelt Positioning
To check whether the seatbelt has been properly applied, hold the car seat and try to forcefully pull it forward or push it to the side. If the car seat moves more than an inch, the seatbelt should be tightened more.
Some seatbelts cannot hold a car seat tightly. Seatbelts attached to the vehicle’s door can’t be used to attach a child car seat to the vehicle, and other seatbelts need metal clips to hold the car seat in place.
Seat Harness
There are three types of seatbelt harnesses. One has two shoulder straps and a strap that lays across the lap. The second has two shoulder straps with a padded bar. The last has two straps, one across the lap and another across the lap.
Placing the Child
To place a child in a car seat, put the harness across the child’s shoulders. Always remember to dress the baby in a fleece outfit, and keep them warm with a blanket. In the case of a convertible seat, be sure to use a jacket.
