Infertility: A Serious Problem
January 6, 2009
Infertility is the inability of a couple to conceive after twelve months of timed relations without the use of contraceptives. The definition also extends to allow couples who are able to conceive, but due to repeated miscarriages, are unable to carry a pregnancy to term.
Factors affecting conception:
Following are some of the factors on which pregnancy depends.
1. Age of the woman: With age, the number and quality of eggs decrease. Fertility decreases after the age of 35. The treatment of infertility is also more effective before the age of 35.
2. Intercourse frequency: Fertility is highly dependent on the frequency of intercourse. Couples who have less frequency of intercourse have more chances of reduced conceiving. The chances of fertility in a couple are only 6 in a month. Therefore proper frequency is the need for fertility.
3. Trying time: It is an important aspect as to how long the couple has been trying to get pregnant. The chances of conceiving are less in a couple who have been trying to conceive for a long time without any success.
Causes of infertility:
There are various causes of infertility. Some of the causes are:
Body weight: Women who are overweight or underweight face problems getting pregnant, as improper body fat leads to reproductive failure in both the men and women.
Diet and exercise: Food items rich in manganese increase the performance of estrogen. Their deficiency can reduce the chances of pregnancy. Deficiency of vitamin D is associated with infertility. Vitamin D helps in the generation of estrogen in both men and women. A little exposure in the sun can provide vitamin D in the body. A moderate exercise will help in maintaining weight and treating reproductive problems.
Smoking: Smoking contributes a lot to the problem of infertility in both men and women. Women who smoke may enter menopause at an early stage while men have diminished sperm.
Medication: People who under go medication for a long period of time experience low sperm counts and many side effects that cause infertility in both men and women.
One can adopt several changes which can lead to a healthy pregnancy as well as a healthy body.
