India’s First Taxi Air Service
May 24, 2008
With the opening up of the Indian aviation sector, there are boundless opportunities for the taking.
Over the last two and half decades the global aviation sector has moved away from government control and ownership towards deregulation and private ownership. Similarly, the Indian aviation sector also characterised by a high degree of Government control prior to 1990, had only two airlines, Indian Airlines that served the domestic sector and Air India, which served the International Sector, both owned and controlled by the Indian government.
However, in 1990 the winds of change that swept in began the liberalisation of India’s aviation sector whereby private sector players were given permission to operate as air taxi operators. And, so, a number of private players commenced domestic operations as air taxi operators, including Jet Airways, Air Sahara, Modiluft, Damania Airways, NEPC Airlines and East West Airlines.
As the Indian economy surged and grew, sub-continental roads became over congested and the air densely polluted. More time was spent in traffic jams than in boardrooms, which showed the need for an alternate solution to beat the travel time gap. This led to a mushrooming of a number of air taxi operators, who managed to convince everyone that air travel was the fastest and most efficient method of transportation. Further, an overbooked domestic airline and shutdown of Kashmir’s major attractions, forced the Indian Government to take new steps to bolster its tourist industry. Forced to open air service to competition, India’s first air taxi service has come into being, in a bid to attract foreign visitors.
Last month southern India got its first air taxi, when a 15-seat Dornier made its inaugural flight, a first for private companies who previously were not allowed to run airlines in India. With the Indian Government keen for foreign firms to invest in the new market, there have been several inquiries received from a dozen entrepreneurs interested in offering air taxi service on other routes.
UB Air owned by United Breweries, a leading beer company is the first entrant operating out of Bangalore. With just one route so far, the airline connects Bangalore with Mangalore three times a week. Confident Airlines is another such to offer air taxi service, allowing you to charter your own aircraft.
India’s first instance of air taxi service is proving popular amongst the time-bound corporate world. Now, instead of getting stuck for hours in traffic jams, company executives can depart on schedule, land closer to their final destination, and walk into their meeting as fresh as when they boarded their air taxi.
The first to visualize chartered airlines for the public, Confident Group’s low cost chartered services have proved to be an immense boon for the corporate sector. Confident Airlines well-built network of facilities for handling extensive aviation and travel operations, which is on par with national and international standards together with a surging Indian economy, has convinced more and more companies and individuals to realize the cost and time-saving benefits of using private jets and helicopters as air taxis.
India’s first air taxi service has shown the way and there are many others keen to blaze the same trail!
