Buy only those sunglasses that provide protection from ultraviolet radiation, a component of sunlight that contributes to eye disease. Sunglasses that block out 99-100% of UVA and UVB radiation are recommended.
Go for sunglasses made from heavier materials as they are more durable. Lens tinting is just as important you will find. Gray lenses reduce brightness, but do not distort colour. Brown and amber tints reduce glare that make things appear hazy. Brown and amber tints tend to distort colours more than gray does. Yellow tinted lenses reduce the haze and really sharpen up the view, but they also cause more colour distortion. Green tinted lenses reduce glare provide a good contrast between objects. Rose coloured lenses provide good contrast for objects viewed against blue or green backgrounds.
Opt for polarised lenses as they reduce the glare of light bouncing off water, highways and other similar surfaces. Look for scratch resistant sunglasses and avoid plastic lenses as they scratch more easily than glass ones. Phtochromatic lenses are great as they darken when exposed to UV radiation and change from bright to dark as required.
