Get the whole kit
You should secure yourself well even if you feel like a robot in the helmet, knee, elbow and wrist pads. If you feel secure enough, you will not be afraid to try more and hence you will learn faster. If you do not wear protective gear, you are putting yourself at risk of getting injured.
Stretch
Always remember to stretch. You should stretch both, before and after a skating session. This will help you warm up and cool down enough to prevent injuries.

You should buy only those skates that fit properly. Just like your shoes, they should not be applying pressure on any particular part of your foot. In such a case, you might end up with blisters, which will make it difficult or impossible for you to skate.
Your feet are the largest at the end of the day or at the end of a training session. So, select your shoe size then.
Remember to try on your skate boots with the same socks that you will be wearing when skating. This will help you find the right comfortable size.
Before you buckle up and skate, remember to kick your feet into the back of the boots so that they fit properly.
Ensure that the heel is stable and not moving up or down in the boot when you skate.
