Vitamin B9 works with your body’s metabolism.  Vitamin B9 is also known as folic acid, pteroylglutamic acid, folate, or folacin.  B9 is made up of chemicals that produce petroglutamic acid (PGA). In its natural form, vitamin B9 is yellow in color.  This article researches the benefits of vitamin B9, where you can get it from, what it is used for, and the signs of a vitamin B9 deficiency.

Vitamin B9 protects the body against heart disease by lowering the levels of homocysteine in the body.  It is used to prevent strokes and heart attacks.  It reduces the risk of a fetus developing cleft lip and palate, as well as certain heart defects.  Vitamin B9 can protect you from some types of cancer.  Vitamin B9 is used to treat mental deficiencies such as depression and anxiety.

Recommended Daily Consumption.

Newborn babies and young infants should take in about sixty-five to eighty milligrams of vitamin B9 a day.  Children in their toddler years should take about 150 milligrams a day.  As the child enters their adolescent years, they should take between 300 to 400 milligrams of vitamin B9 daily.  The recommended dosage gets higher as the person reaches their adult years.

Sources of B9
Vitamin B9 can be found in many food items.  It is most prominent in beans, legumes and peas, whole grains, fortified cereals and juices, bananas and oranges, milk, root vegetables, and green vegetables.

Uses of B9
Vitamin B9 is given to women during pregnancy to aid in the prevention of certain birth defects.  It also helps the neural tube develop properly.  Vitamin B9 builds red blood cells and aids in the development and maintenance of new blood cells.  It works to increase serotonin levels in the brain, which regulates a person’s mood, their ability to sleep, and their hunger levels.

B9 Deficiencies
When a person is lacking vitamin B9, they may be subject to the following illnesses and setbacks:  anemia, dark blotchy skin, fatigue, gastrointestinal problems including constipation or diarrhea, heart problems, lack of appetite, difficulty sleeping, and problems with their memory and mental state.
