An open sore that can occur in mouth is called a mouth ulcer. It can also be a break in the lip epithelium or in the mucous membrane that surrounds itself around the mouth.

Many types of mouth ulcers are found and the causes of them include acidic fruit, physical abrasion, non specific and cancerous processes, medications and certain dental conditions. When once formed, these ulcers can be further maintained by a secondary infection or by inflammation.

They typically come in the form of mouth wash but might be obtained in other forms as well. These are prescribed in most severe cases of the disease. The doctor can prescribe the medication after complete diagnosis.
