How To Say Mother In Different Languages

‘God could not be everywhere, therefore he made mothers!’ So, goes a Jewish proverb and never was a truer word spoken. As we all know, the first word that a child learns as he begins to speak is the word Mother, irrespective of the language he speaks in.
As Mothers Day is celebrated across the world, and mothers addressed in many different languages, whether as Mama, Mummy, Maman, Mae, Madre, Mere etc. it sounds just as sweet due to its association with the most important person in our lives. Special, as they are, mothers have always been so even in ancient times, when a special day was set aside for them and they were given gifts, feted and celebrated for the distinctive role they play in the life of their children.
The first celebrations held in honour of mothers was in the springtime in ancient Greece, when they paid tribute to Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. For thousands of years, the Hindus in India have been celebrating Durga Puja, a 10-day festival in honour of Durga, the divine mother. Kali Ma, the Great Mother is honoured in Hindu scriptures and credited with the invention of writing. Even Buddha honoured mothers saying: As a mother, even at the risk of her own life, loves and protects her child, so let a man cultivate love without measure toward the whole world.
So, however you may say mother in different languages, when Mom’s Day rolls around, show your love and appreciation by surprising her with a call or a visit. Take her out to dinner, or better still cook a special one for her. Spend time reminiscing about your childhood, and tell her how special it was because of her. Send her a card or gift her some flowers and chocolates, with a poem specially written for her. A quote of Claudia Ghandi shows the special place of mothers in our lives: “If I had a single flower for every time I think about you, I could walk forever in my garden.”
No matter how we say mother in different languages, there is no one the world over who does not think his mother special!
