How to quit smoking
April 27, 2009
An increasing number of known negative side effects have prompted most smokers to try quitting at some point in time. Smoking is a habit and addiction that damages an individual’s health.
Yet most smokers don’t really put their best efforts into the matter, but rather think of quitting in passing or as a wishful thought.
A lot of articles have been written on how to give up this vice. Several methods have been patented or turned into business ideas and sold to those wanting to get rid of this habit.
An interesting fact is that everyone offers a different solution to the problem. Below are some of the highlights of these cessation programs and their methods.
One group claims that you should not give the habit up all at once for it may affect your body adversely. Others guarantee that you will have no desire to smoke after having talked to them for a few minutes, or after having read their booklet of less than a hundred pages.
If you were to talk to those who have given up smoking you would find that a good number of them just decided to quit and gave it up on an impulse, without any side effects.
Nevertheless, one common underlying characteristic of those who have quit smoking is determination and giving the matter a sincere effort. There is no magic wand or medicine available to help you quit smoking. You must develop willpower.
Do not feel disheartened if you fail in your first attempt. On the contrary, have a positive attitude and promise yourself that in your next attempt you’ll try harder and keep yourself motivated. Quite often smokers succeed on their fifth or sixth attempt, not their first.
The way for you to stop smoking may be either a sudden stop or a gradual weaning but either way it will most certainly rely on your own personal willpower and the help of others. Avoid the company of smokers. Instead, engage in some sporting activity or attend group therapy.
It has been reported that laser therapy acupuncture and hypnosis are effective modern techniques in helping those who want to quit smoking.
It is up to you to decide which method you should employ, but as previously mentioned, you have to have determination. Being determined is the first and most important factor in getting rid of this habit.
