How to Prevent Eye Problems
June 17, 2009
Our eyes help us understand and interpret the world around us. They allow us to see the faces of those we love, and experience the amazing sights life has to offer.
It’s only natural that they should be well cared for. Staring at a computer screen for hours is one of the leading causes of eye problems, but these can be prevented if you take proper care of your precious peepers.
One daily tip is to flush your eyes with cold water two or three times a day. You can also try that often-seen process of placing cucumber slices over your eyelids, which will help reduce strain after a long workday. Drink plenty of water and make sure you get enough vitamins A, C and E.
Regularly exercising your eyes can also help. Take time to slowly move your eyes in every direction, holding each eye position for a few seconds every time.
You can also try moving them in slow circular motions. Another helpful exercise is known as palming: rub your palms together and place them softly against your closed eyes. This will increase circulation in and around your eye, helping to prevent strain.
If you wear contact lenses, taking care of them is one of the most important things you can do for keeping your eyes healthy. Contacts are much closer to the eye, so they should be cleaned thoroughly every time you remove them. Keep them in their case when you’re not wearing them to help prevent contamination.
Glasses can be incredibly important for eye protection. They help to prevent damage from direct light exposure, as well as offer some protection against dust particles that could enter your eye. Sunglasses and specially treated UV glasses can protect your eyes from the harsh and damaging rays of the sun.
Essential to eye care are regular check-ups. It’s important to get your vision regularly checked by a professional, because if you wait until something appears wrong with your eyesight, it could already be too late. Visit an optician at least once a year to make sure your eyes are healthy.
Preventing and avoiding eyestrain is the best way to protect your eyes from permanent damage. Take short breaks when reading, writing, or working on a computer. Always maintain a sufficient level of light when working. Blink frequently to remove any possible particle contamination and never hold reading material too close to your eyes.
A few simple steps taken each day and you could keep those beautiful eyes of yours in healthy working order.
