Materials Required
You will need the following supplies for your new found hobby of hand-painted wine glasses:
Clear wine glasses, you don’t need to break the bank buying the most expensive variety. Just visit you local craft store and pick up some inexpensive glassware.
Glass paint which is easily available in most craft stores in a variety of colours. Check o see whether the paint is made especially for glass and if it can be set by heating the glassware in an oven.
Small and medium sized paint brushes with either soft of firm bristles depending on your preference.
Clip art, only if you are not skilled at freehand drawing and painting.
Clear tape for sticking the clip art onto the glass.
Once you have got the materials together, it’s time to decide to choose the design for the wine glasses. Beginners should go with simple designs till they get the hang of painting wine glasses. Next the clip art should be cut to a size small enough to fit inside the glass. Position the picture (inside the glass, picture side out) where you want the design to be and secure it with clear tape. Using the clip art as a guide, paint on the outside of the glass.
For some colors and paints, it may be necessary for you to apply two or more coats. If, this is necessary, make sure the first coat of paint is dry before you apply the next coat. While it is dependent on your design, it is a good idea to outline the picture in a dark colour so that it stands out. Metallic gold or silver accents can be used for adding a touch of supreme elegance. And, why not get creative by adding some freehand specks or swirls to the design, as well.
Allow the paint to dry completely, then remove the clip art and tape from inside the glass and follow directions on the paint container for heating instructions. Often, this requires putting the wine glasses in an oven for a designated period of time to set the paint. This ensures the paint can withstand washing without chipping. Cool the glasses before you attempt to remove them from the oven. When cool, you have some beautiful wine glasses ready to be given as gifts or for decorating your home!
