How to maximise your doctors visit
February 4, 2009
With the hefty prices you have to pay for doctors, going for a regular check up does not seem to be a great idea. However, it is necessary for a young male to have a complete physical every two years. Here are a few things you can keep in mind to make the most of your doctor’s visit
Make the right choice
Choose a physician who is covered under your health plan. This will save you from spending more than you have to. You can easily get a list from your health care provider.
Find a doctor who you will feel more comfortable with. If it is a male doctor your age then go for him or it is a female doctor you want, go for her. Remember it is your health on line here.
Be prepared
Take the right amount of information with you. You need to keep your medical history handy so that you can discuss it with the doctor. If you have written records, do not leave them at home.
Be sure of all the physical problems you want to discuss before making the appointment so that you will not lose any time. Make a note of all symptoms accurately so that the doctor will be able to help you well.
Open up to the doctor
This is no place to be shy. Arrive on time and talk to him openly about what you are feeling. He is there to help you and not judge you. Ask questions if you have to. Do not keep anything back. There is nothing you cannot tell him. Take your time and clear up everything you want to know, you do not want to leave his office in doubt.
Pay close attention
Do not day dream or become so anxious that you do not remember correctly what the doctor is telling you. Pay attention to what he is talking about.
Do not lie
Speak about your symptoms in detail and do not lie about anything. If you smoke, tell him, do not hold it back. It might be important. Besides your overall health, the doctor needs to check your sexual health also. Therefore, be honest about that too. Talk about all the products or over-the-counter drugs that you may be taking.
Take the physical
It should not be painful. However it depends on individuals, so if you do not feel so good about needles, prepare yourself beforehand for this.
Follow up
Call your doctor after your visit if some other health issues come up. However, do not overdo it. Take all the prescribed medications.
Now you should be ready to make an appointment.
