How To Make Perfumes At Home
June 7, 2008
Every one likes to smell good but if your budget doesn’t stretch to buying yourself a bottle of expensive store bought perfume, why not make them at home. Making perfumes at home doesn’t require any special skill, all one needs to do is to follow the proper procedure to come up with a great smelling fragrance. Since, Perfumer’s Alcohol isn’t easy to find, replace it by using Vodka instead. Use only 100 proof alcohol, testing it out on your skin for any allergic reaction.
Most simple perfumes are a mixture of alcohol, essential of fragrance oils and distilled water. Stir the oils slowing into the alcohol, a drop at a time. Stir slowly but long enough for the oils to completely disperse. Let the blend of oil and alcohol stand undisturbed for 48 hours. Add distilled water, again stirring slowly until completely dispersed. Like fine wine, perfume needs to stand and mature before it reaches perfection. Let your perfume stand for at least three weeks in a cool dark place. Once it has matured, filter it through a coffee filter to remove any sediment and bottle in a glass bottle with a stopper.
The fun in making your own fragrances is to be able to experiment. Here are some recipes to get started:
Rain Shower: Reminiscent a lingering rain shower, this is a very light scent. You will need 5 drops Bergamot, 3 drops Sandalwood, 5 drops Cassis, 1 cup distilled water, 5 teaspoons of Vodka.
Blend the ingredients as explained above.
English Country Garden: 5 drops Valerian, 5 drops Chamomile, 3 drops Lavender, 1 cup distilled water, 5 teaspoons Vodka. Blend all ingredients.
The following perfume recipes require 1 cup of distilled water and 5 teaspoons of vodka or other spirit, only the fragrance oils vary.
Arabian Nights: 3 drops of coriander oil, 1 drop of Frankincense oil, 3 drops of Juniper oil, 4 drops of Orange oil.
Stimulation: 1 drop Frankincense oil, 4 drops Grapefruit oil, 3 drops Rosemary oil, 2 drops Spearmint oil.
Fresh ‘n Sweet Cologne: 3 drops lemongrass oil, 10 drops lavender oil, 10 drops lime oil.
You can also make perfume using home ingredients only. Take about a cup and a half of flower blossoms, such as, rose, lavender, honeysuckle or any flower with a strong fragrance. Chop roughly and add to three cups of warm water. Soak overnight and in the morning strain through cheesecloth or similar material. Place the mixture in an old saucepan and simmer gently on low heat. Reduce mixture until there are only a few tablespoons left. Cool and store in a suitable bottle. This fragrance will keep for about a month or six weeks in a cool place
