How to make kitchen curtains

January 10, 2009

When it comes to decorating your house, the most difficult part is the kitchen. It is difficult because it is also a workplace and therefore you have to balance the décor with the utility of the kitchen. Usually, kitchens are also the place where the family gathers and has great fun because you can find your mother most often in the kitchen.

There are so many aspects that you need to keep in mind when you design or decorate your kitchen. You have to keep the space workable as well as beautiful. This can be a daunting task if not handled properly. Accessorising a kitchen adds to the beauty factor and accentuates its overall look.

Among other kitchen accessories, curtains form a very important part. Some people go for blinds for the modern look; however, curtains add a certain homeliness to the kitchen. A number of varieties of kitchen curtains are available on the market. Nevertheless, if you are the creative type, you may opt for doing it yourself. This is a great idea because it also adds a personal touch to the kitchen.

Here are a few things you should keep in mind while making your own kitchen curtains.

Go for the right kind of fabric
If you want to, you can do some research and find out which fabric you want. Also consider what you require out of the fabric and then make a choice. You would want to keep away from quilted fabrics because they tend to shrink soon.

On the other hand, cotton and linen form the perfect choice for curtains. You would want to pass silk also. Although it might appear to be fine and make the kitchen look rich, it fades easily and so you will have to keep on replacing them often,

Buy enough fabric
Take proper measurements of where you want your curtains. Buy fabric that is at least two times the height and three times the width of the window.

Take proper stitches
If you are planning to have rings then stitch, a 3-inch hem at the edge of the curtain panels and then attach a ring to each curtain panel. There should be some distance between each ring so that the curtain can be easily pulled. You can also go for clipping the rings on the curtain instead of stitching them. They attach quickly and are safe enough.
