How To Make A Small Room Look Larger
July 23, 2008
While, small is beautiful, easy and practical too, yet one has to make some compromises in decorating the place, including being highly organized, and having to make lifestyle adjustments in order tofit everything in a small room without feeling cramped. However, you can make a small room larger by fooling the eye. The following tips on making a small room look larger really do work, so why not try them out.
Begin by clearing out the clutter, think less is more, work out how to things out of view behind doors, table skirts, or on shelves. With everything neatly arranged or out of sight, will give the impression of openness and space.
Unblock the View
Open the way and get rid of or rearrange furniture or accessories that block a room’s view. For example, move furniture out and away from walkways, which will help open up space and make the room appear bigger. Opt for small or short pieces of furniture i.e. an ottoman, armless chairs, low tables. Place larger, taller pieces along a wall rather than out in open spaces. If, one can see the floor, one will think the room is larger than it really is.
Soft, Pastel Colour Schemes
Decorate the place using soft, light colours. Whereas dark, warm colours help to make a room look intimate and cosy, light, cool colours tend to make it look airy and spacious. For optimum effect, go for soft blues and greens tones.
Go Monochromatic
Using colours of the same hue and tone-on-tone woven upholstery fabrics, textured wall finishes, delicate tonal drapery fabrics will give the room an open look.
Co-ordinate Wall and Furniture Colours
Contrasting colours tend to break up space. Instead, colour match furniture to the wall colour, so that it doesn’t interrupt the space, rather it blends in.
Let In The Light
Any room that is well lit looks larger. Replace heavy draperies with light sheers and open up the windows to let natural light in. Add more lamps or recessed lighting if the room does not have sufficient window to let natural light in.
See-Through Space
Use see through materials to make a room look bigger e.g. a clear, frameless bath shower instead of an opaque one. Glass or Lucite tabletops with sturdy wood, stone or metal bases help to open the view beyond.
Reflective Surfaces
Mirrored walls always make a room look larger, however, if one does not like them, why not use a large framed mirror on the wall, or stand an oversized framed mirror against a wall, which will give a room-enlarging effect reflecting space and the light, just the same as a mirrored wall does. Or else, top a coffee table or side table with a piece of bevelled plate glass or cover a chest of drawers or bureau with custom-cut and installed mirrors.
Interior decorators recommend plain upholstery, using texture for interest and sticking to neutral tones. Drapery should be of sheer fabrics that allow light to pass through. Stick to this mantra and you can make even a small flat look light and airy with spacious openness!
