A beauty treatment for hands and nails, a manicure involves cleaning and shaping nails, taking care of cuticles to improve the look and feel of one’s hands using a variety of tools, creams, oils, waxes and massage techniques. A manicure helps improve the texture and health of both nails and the skin of the hands, while leaving them looking polished and perfect.
A good manicure not only cleans, shapes, strengthens and even ‘dresses’ your nails, but tends to any skin problems around the nail, such as, broken or sore skin. Acupressure or hand-massage techniques helps stimulate blood and lymph flow to improve the health of your skin, while oils, creams and exfoliaters, cleanse and improve the texture of skin and nails. A good manicure not only makes hands look good, it also relaxes and soothes.
Prepare for your manicure by taking of your rings and removing all traces of old nail polish. There are many different kinds of manicures available, such as:
French: A classic manicure, the nail is cut quite square and then the nail body is painted with clear or ivory-coloured polish, while the nail tips are painted white.
Paraffin Wax: Warm wax is rubbed into nails, hands and wrists to moisturise and soften.
American: A natural-looking manicure which shapes the nails to your finger tip.
Luxury: Going the whole hog, this manicure includes a hand massage, softening paraffin wax and heated mittens or wrap which warms and soothes hands, while softens and hydrates the nails.
Hot stone: Hands are massaged with a hot stone to soothe and relax them.
Perfect salon manicures may look great but cost a mini fortune, and while everyone cannot afford salon manicures, clean, healthy looking nails are definitely a great asset to your appearance. However, you don’t have to go in for expensive manicures but can go them at home yourself. All that you require is a three way nail file, a cuticle trimmer, a cuticle stick, and nail clippers. You will also need a base and top coat polish for keeping your nail polish from chipping and sealing the colour in to make it last longer.
Now get together some warm towels, a small tub of warm soapy water, and hand lotion. Soak hands in warm water for 10 – 15 minutes. Rinse and pat dry. With the cuticle stick gently push back cuticles. Use the cuticle trimmer to trim all rough skin around the nail. Now massage hand lotion into your hands to soften and moisturise them.
Apply base coat to nails after removing all traces of hand lotion. Next paint nails with colour polish and let dry. Finish off your manicure by painting a clear top coat of polish to keep your nail polish looking fresh and bright! Now that you know how to do a good manicure, you can indulge yourself or your friends with the best manicure in town!
