How To Defend Yourself
July 19, 2008
How do you teach self defence without emphasizing, and therefore promoting, fear? How to do self defence is all about empowerment, not fear. Learning how to defend oneself makes one aware, knowledgeable and skilful enough to handle any situation without fearing anything or anyone. In order to create a better world, one should have the tools to STOP violence and protect oneself.
Everyone should know how to do self-defence, though the focus is mainly on the female sex. However, self defence techniques work for both men and women. Self defence, self confidence, self worth and self preservation, every human being whether male or female should be able to walk with confidence, without fear.
With crime and violence on the rise, every single person should know be ready to defend himself. Self defence begins with tapping into your instincts; learning effective marital arts tricks that help you exude confidence that says “Don’t mess with me!” If, you feel the situation is getting out of hand or that a certain place poses a threat, listen to your inner voice, because it is probably right and is trying to warn you of potential danger.
Look around you; be aware of your surroundings, your neighbours. This could help prevent a stranger from observing your day to day activities and lay a trap for you. Be vigilant, do not attract unnecessary attraction or make an excessive display of wealth, as that will only attract burglars. Similarly, women should be careful to dress conservatively rather than in a provocative manner when travelling alone. Dressing up in scanty, revealing clothes may lead to sexual attacks.
Don’t reveal personal details to strangers. If, you feel someone is following you, turn back and look into his eyes. His immediate response will inform you whether he was following you or just happened to be on your tail.
Always remember to latch the door when you go out to check the mailbox or are gardening. Refuse to open the door to strangers. Never travel alone at night, especially in dark, poorly lit areas. Go out in a group and ensure you only take well lit routes. Check your car before getting into it i.e. look around you, check the passenger and back seat of your car before you get into it.
When you are in an elevator with a stranger, keep close to the door and near the operating buttons, so that in case of an attack you can get out immediately. If, attacked in a public place, yell as loud as you can to attract attention. When sensing an impending attack, don’t panic, if attacked from the back, step back on the attacker’s toes and jab your elbow in his face. Turn pens, keys, sprays, umbrellas, bags, anything you are carrying into a weapon to attack the intruder, even using nails and teeth while aiming for his face and collarbone. Escape from the scene as soon as possible.
As well, keep an alert mind and report any unusual activity in your area to the police immediately. Knowing how to do self defence is the best kind of defence!
