How to alleviate a cough
April 21, 2009
Coughing is the body’s mechanism through which it can expel excess mucous from the lungs. The lung’s air passages are lined with mucous-secreting cells that trap particles of dust and other foreign materials.
Once the membranes containing these cells become irritated, they produce excess mucous, which is expelled from the lungs by coughing.
Causes
• Inflammation of the respiratory organs
• Infection of the respiratory system
• Extreme changes in weather or environment
• High humidity
• Clogged or irritated bronchial tubes
• Use of tobacco products
• Allergies
• Sinus infections
• Common cold
Symptoms
• Deep breath inhalation
• A discharge of body secretions or foreign materials from the lungs
Beneficial diets
Orange juice – fast on orange juice diluted with warm water by drinking it every two hours over a 12-hour period. Fresh fruits – immediately after fasting on the orange juice/warm water diet, eat only fresh fruits for the next 2 to 3 days.
Well-balanced diet – immediately following the fresh fruit diet, implement a well-balanced diet including wholegrain cereals, fresh fruits, nuts, and fresh or raw vegetables. Try to avoid ingesting excessive amounts of meat, sugar, white flour, processed foods, refined foods, tea, or coffee.
Helpful tips
Daily apply warm water enemas when a severe cough is present. Stop using tobacco products. Be mindful of existing allergies and try to avoid their triggers. Don’t wear excessive clothing during the winter months – layer your clothing so that you can remove the layers as your body warms up.
Home remedies
Grape juice – grape juice mixed with honey acts as an expectorant to relieve coughs. Onion juice – 1 teaspoon onion juice should be mixed with 1 teaspoon honey; allow the mixture to stand for several hours and then use as a cough syrup twice a day.
Raisin sauce – raisin sauce is prepared by crushing 100 raisins in water, then adding sugar and heating the mixture. Take 20 grams before going to bed.
Almond pastes – remove the brown skin from almonds, then soak the kernels overnight in water. Grind the almonds into a paste the next morning and add butter and sugar. Take the paste twice a day.
