How Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis is Diagnosed

October 27, 2008

Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis is one of the diseases which affect children. For most doctors and researchers, the cause of this disease is still shrouded in mystery. Although it is not a hereditary disorder it is believed that certain hereditary factors could be responsible for it. The main symptom of this disease is the swollen joints that are painful, thus making movement difficult. It may also be accompanied by rashes and fever.

Watch the symptoms
The diagnosis of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis is based entirely on the symptoms exhibited by the child. There is no single and definitive laboratory test that can be used to diagnose the disease. But there are some blood tests which can be useful. Through X-ray studies, changes in the formation of bones and joints, indicating the presence of the disease, could be detected.

Series of tests required
It is only after conducting a series of tests that the doctor can make conclusions about the extent of the disease. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is therefore normally diagnosed after a complete examination of all the symptoms observed in the child. The problem is often compounded by the fact that there are many other diseases with the same or similar symptoms and there is no particular test to diagnose it. The conclusion as to whether a child has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis or not is made when the symptoms persist for more than six weeks. The case could then be referred to a paediatric rheumatologist.

The Rheumatologist
Further assessments are done by the rheumatologist. He/she will go through the child’s medical history looking for some pertinent clues. A blood test and X-rays are done. X-rays are done to see if there are damages to the bones in the joints or not while the blood test help to detect antibodies that may be the cause of the problem.

It becomes necessary for a complete blood count test to be done to look for any abnormalities in the cells. Some other tests done are bone scan, bone marrow examination, a test for autoimmunity, and blood culture tests. Putting all these test results together, the doctor can then make an assessment of the disease in order to prescribe medication and therapy.
