How Collagen and Elastin Work on the Skin
September 4, 2009
We come across many cosmetics containing collagen and elastin. They are promising to do miracles for the skin. Everyone loves having a flawless and beautiful skin and hence try out every cream advertised. Although, people often blindly buy the products but there’s no proven result.
The fibers in the dermis layer of the skin are made up of proteins called collagen and elastin. Whereas, the upper layer epidermis is made up of keratin, which is also a protein.
The production of fiber in the skin decreases as one grows old. Since the fibers are made of proteins, the main concept behind the use of elastin and collagen in creams is to balance the protein content in skin. But, balancing the protein content does not necessarily trigger the production of fibers.
Moreover, the collagen and elastin used in creams are not in their original form. Collagen is a hard substance, which is softened by heating to high temperatures.
When collagen protein is subjected to high temperature, it turns into gelatinous substance. Elastin is a rubbery substance, which is mixed with various chemicals to make it soluble in water.
These chemicals in turn harm the skin. Hence, the creams, which show their contents to be collagen and elastin, do not even contain pure collagen and elastin and there’s no way that they can enter into the dermis layer.
Not all the products are fakes. There are some products, which may have a little effect on the skin. But the effects vanish in no time. Cosmetics, which are known to contain elastin and collagen, do not produce a long lasting effect on skin.
There are some creams containing keratin. Keratin is a protein that can help to produce new cells in epidermis. Keratin also helps in stimulation of anti-oxidants, which fights against skin damage and ageing. The creams containing keratin are useful to some extent in improving the health and appearance of the skin.
The anti-oxidants have been found beneficial to the skin. Some of them reduce the damage caused to the skin and some are known to reduce brown pigmentation and ageing. These results are not obtained with the creams containing elastin and collagen.
People study that the skin contains proteins elastin and collagen and hence when they hear of the creams containing elastin and collagen, they easily get carried away. The cosmetic companies utilize this for their business growth. It’s just a business tactic.
So neither collagen nor elastin is the medicine for skin. It’s time that we stop getting carried away by advertisements portraying beautiful models. The real food for the skin is anti-oxidants. They can show remarkable effects on skin. The creams containing anti-oxidants are a wise choice.
