Honest Supplements
October 17, 2008
The enormous rise in carcinogens, and harmful environmental toxins, has hindered the efficiency with which fruits, vegetables, and other “power” foods work. Dietary supplements have become a necessary part of health, nutrition, and fitness. However, the bottom line of supplement manufactures has made it almost impossible to distinguish the meaningful supplements, from the worthless bulk.
Multivitamins
Modern technology and processing has provided time, but destroyed many of the naturally occurring nutrients, and health properties of foods. Multivitamins are the single most important supplement of the bunch. A daily multivitamin aids in the healthy functioning of all the bodies tissues, organs and systems. Multivitamins are essential for the growth, strength, and health of the human body, as they supplement the nutrients which foods lack, or which are destroyed when food is cooked.
Glutamine
This is the most common amino acid in muscles, and primary transporter of nitrogen into muscle cells. It aids muscle metabolism, and cellular support, and is of major importance to strength, endurance, and recovery. Additionally, research has shown that glutamine is important to protein synthesis, maintenance of cellular volume and hydration, release of growth hormones, and the maintenance of structural integrity of the bowels.
Calcium
Besides aiding healthy bones and teeth, researchers suggest that sufficient calcium intake assists in the prevention of both cancer, more specifically colon cancer, and heart disease. Research suggests that calcium may reduce the risk of colon cancer, and inhibit the growth cancerous polyps, since unabsorbed calcium binds with cancer promoters, and are consequently excreted from the body. Sufficient calcium supplementation also curbs high blood pressure, since calcitriol production is inhibited. Thus, calcium aids in the maintenance of a healthy heart.
Folic Acid
Folic Acid is paramount to the prevention of cardiovascular disease, and neurological impairment. It is necessary for cell growth and division, DNA replication and protein synthesis. With the exception of organic foods, folic acid content in modern day food is inadequate. It is therefore important that a supplement be taken to correct the necessary, but lacking folic acid content. In any case, the body absorbs more folic acid in supplement form, than is does from food.
Due to the commercialisation of the nutrition supplementation industry, finding the right supplements is a daunting task. However, basic knowledge of supplements, and their real value, as opposed to their value as professed by marketers, will assist in choosing those, which are beneficial to healthy function, and general wellbeing.
