Homeless Children-A Challenge To Provide a Safe Haven
July 18, 2008
“Home sweet home”; so went the famous adage. From the journey of childhood to adult world, home has always been considered a sacred haven to return to. The four walls of the house lay testimony to the fact that the warmth, love and cocoon of safety that our own home constitutes are unparalleled. Have you ever thought of waking up one day and finding yourself without a home? Even the thought is scary. But the grim reality is that out of every 2 million population homeless, the homeless children comprise a big chunk.
CONCEPT OF HOMELESSNESS
Homelessness is, therefore, considered to be a condition of being without a home. This may be because the children may be destitute, living in social care centers, spending time in day care awaiting adoption. A majority of them escape the shelters to make something of their wretched lives. Some may be living as illegal immigrants in camps as well.
MAJOR FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR HOMELESSNESS
Poverty and low economic strata:
The children usually lack enough finances to sustain a roof over their heads. Their parents live below the poverty line and the homeless children are forced to live a hands-to-mouth existence.
Housing opportunities non existent:
The background check of the societies is so fool proof and costly that the children cannot afford them. They are more prone to abuse especially girls.
Jobs not high paying:
The employers employ such children on a fixed wage but pay peanuts when it comes to paying the actual salary.
Dearth of good jobs:
The homeless children are given measly jobs of polishing shoes and washing utensils in third world countries. So their earning remains very limited. The girls are employed as maids to do back breaking kitchen work and only given one meal per day as salary and token of kindness.
HOW HOMELESSNESS CAN BE WIPED OUT
If every family decides to adopt or sponsor one homeless child, the problem can be solved. The television shows should show reality and generate donations for the homeless children. The key is to mobilize the public opinion.
Children are a blessing. It is high time society collectively sponsors every destitute on the street providing them with high paying alternative forms of income. If the homeless children get the dream opportunity of earning a degree, may be this trip to your home may be much sweeter.
