Hives or Urticaria is an allergic skin reaction that is accompanied by red welts on the skin; sometimes slightly raised marks appear on the body.” These tend to itch considerably and when scratched, can produce lesions on the body. The welts and itching can last for up to 24 hours before subsiding. Whereas Hives or Urticaria is a chronic affliction, welts take much longer to subside.

Causes of Hives

Acute Urticaria is caused by a variety of factors, food allergy being one of the major culprits. Fish, eggs and nuts, especially peanuts, are among the most common sources of allergy. Seasonal factors such as pollen can bring on an attack of Hives. The ordinary dust that sometimes accumulates in the house can sometimes harbor minute Acarids that can cause an allergic reaction.

Chronic Hives

Chronic Urticaria is often due to emotional or mental stress. The reactions are the same as those of acute Urticaria, slightly raised red welts on various parts of the body. The treatment given should take into consideration the stress factor as well as the physical manifestations of the complaint.

Calamine Lotion and Other Alkaline Remedies

One of the best remedies for Hives is Calamine Lotion. When applied on the red welts, it relieves the itch and the welts gradually disappear. Witch Hazel is also a good remedy for the relief of Hives. Milk of Magnesia, when applied topically on the welts is an excellent means of getting rid of the itch. These remedies are all alkaline in nature.

Oatmeal Liquid

Another remedy for Hives can be made by pouring boiling water onto oatmeal and letting it rest for half hour. You should then strain the oatmeal and pour the liquid obtained into a clean container. This liquid can then be applied onto the welts with the aid of a cotton ball.

Baking Soda and Cornstarch

You should pour half a cup of Baking Soda and the same amount of Cornstarch into half a tub of water. Make sure that the contents are thoroughly mixed and then soak your body for ten minutes or more, in the mixture. Do this several times a day until you obtain permanent relief.
