There are many reasons for dark underarms, such as, friction due to tight blouses and tops brushing against the skin, Excessive sweating, infections due to improper washing of underarms, shaving, dead skin build-up, chemicals, alcohol and strong fragrance in deodorants.
There are several natural home remedies that are quite effective in getting rid of dark underarms, as also wearing sleeveless outwear!
Rubbing lemon slices will lighten the dark skin tone. It is also better to use alum powder instead of deodorants to prevent the skin from darkening. Apply baking soda or Vitamin E to the armpits after taking a shower. Washing armpits with coconut oil made into a paste with one teaspoon each of lime juice, cucumber juice and a pinch of turmeric powder applied and rinsed after 20 minutes works well.
Another natural home remedy that has proven effective is applying a paste of 1 tbsp. curd, 1 tsp. gram flour, pinch of turmeric and 1 tsp. milk on the underarms. Rinse with cold water when dry. Follow with a paste of rose water and sandalwood powder, which serves as a deodarant and takes care of excessive sweating and body odour caused by it.
Apple cider vinegar, white vinegar, anti-bacterial rosemary and witch hazel can all be used as deodarants in place of the chemical based ones people seem to have so much of faith in. What they don’t realize is that these chemicals tend to react and cause the skin to darken.
Other suggestions include using anti-fungal powder instead of anti-perspirants and cotton clothes instead of synthetics. Forget shaving underarms, instead opt for waxing which not only helps to remove underarm hair, but it also acts as a exfoliater, as when you strip off the wax, along with hair it removes dead skin, as well.
