Home Remedies for Head Lice

The important symptoms of lice infestation are seeing live lice moving around on your child’s head or finding white oval shaped lice eggs or nits attached to the sides of hairs. The child complains of itchiness in the scalp and head. If you find lice or lice eggs in scalp of your child, follow these simple and effective home remedies to get rid of head lice.
The most common and effective treatment of head lice is to remove the nits and live lice with a lice comb and/or tweezers. Though this method is time consuming and needs to be repeated for several days, it offers best solution to the problem.
You can also put Vaseline, olive oil, petroleum jelly, food grade oil or mayonnaise on your child’s scalp and leave it overnight to smother the head lice. As you remove these oils from your child’s hair, nits and lice also comes out.
Another effective home remedy is to use the mixture of mayonnaise, vinegar and few drops of tea tree oil. Put the mixture in the hair and cover the entire scalp and the entire hair. Start at the base of the head and work your way upwards. Leave the mixture in the hair for at least 2 hours. Put a shower cap over the hair and press it to remove air. You can also spray the mixture of tea tree oil and water over the pillows, blankets, chairs, couch and carpets. The tea tree oil acts as a repellent and repels the lice. You can also add few drops of tea tree oil into the shampoo too. After two hours, rinse the hair and comb the hair with a lice comb to remove the dead lice as well as the eggs. The eggs will come out easily as the vinegar has eaten the glue which held the eggs to the hair. Repeat the procedure next week and you would be amazed at the results.
You can add one part lime juice and one part garlic and rub this paste on the scalp.
You can also try the mixture of neem leaves, basil leaves and 8-10 cloves using beer.
Do not share the personal items like combs, brushes, clips, hair bands, hats, coats, scarves or towels.
Boil some neem leaves in a mug of water and use the water on your hair after shampoo and leave for few minutes. Rinse your hair with plain water.
Pour lamp oil over your head until your hair is saturated with it. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Now comb your hair with a fine comb.
