Hirsutism Excess Body Hair
May 29, 2009
Hirsutism is a common problem that affects every 1 in 20 women in their reproductive age. Hirsutism is caused when there is excessive hair growth on the face/body. Hirsutism is a condition, which is affecting women in places where the hair growth is usually minimal/absent.
Increased release of androgens (male hormones)/tumors of ovaries can be held responsible for hirsutism in women.
Hirsutism in women is a cosmetic concern; however, when accompanied by masculinity symptoms, it is a problem. Some other causes include mental tension, polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing’s Disease, medicinal side-effects; excess weight and infertility. If hair follicles are sensitive to male hormones, that also causes hirsutism in women.
Detecting Hirsutism
Detecting hirsutism is easy if the woman shows signs linked to high levels of male hormones generation, such as irregular menstrual periods, acne, deep voice, and extra muscle mass.
Women suffering from hirsutism have dark/thick hair on the chest, abdomen, face, and back. This hair is different from hair other women have on their chin, breasts, upper lips/stomach or fine “baby” hair on their body.
Women in few ethnic groups do tend to have excess body hair than woman from other ethnic groups. However, they can’t be termed as suffering from hirsutism.
Mild hirsutism is part of a normal growth process, and as such little abnormal hair, may crop up in teenaged girls when they reach puberty or in woman when they suffer from menopause.
Getting Rid of Hirsutism (Excess Body Hair)
If a woman is overweight then losing weight is essential to get rid of hirsutism. Once a woman starts losing weight, hormone production in her body, which is responsible for increased hair growth also reduces.
Shaving the hair is the safest and easiest method to remove hair, but it is an unacceptable way of controlling facial hair in women in numerous countries. If still used, shaving makes the skin become irritated, applying 1% hydrocortisone cream will be beneficial.
Using depilatories that remove hair is ideal for dealing with hirsutism. As these creams irritate the skin, its’ better to test the skin sensitiveness by applying a little bit of cream on inside of your wrist. If there is no bad reaction after 1 day, these can be used freely.
Using bleaching paste as per direction is also an option to control hirsutism. Though sometimes bleaching products may irritate the skin, bleaching makes’ the existing hair far less conspicuous.
Waxing is also a method to control excess hair from arms, hands, and legs. But for women who suffer from hirsutism, its better to avoid these methods.
Electrolysis is an expensive and time-consuming method to control excess body hair. However, it is necessary to make sure the person who does electrolysis is qualified and licensed. In electrolysis, the hair roots are deliberately weakened by passing electric currents through them stopping excess hair growth.
Laser hair removal is a method where lasers are used to damage hair follicles, forcing unwanted hair to fall out.
