What is high blood pressure?
High blood pressure is a condition in which the blood that passes through the walls of the arteries, are pushing really hard and the harder the blood pushes against the arteries, the higher the blood pressure of that person. If this condition continues for a long time, then the walls of the arteries will explode, causing the person to go into cardiac arrest and possible death.
What causes a person to have high blood pressure?
The exact cause or causes of a person having high blood pressure are unknown, but the main factors for a person having high blood pressure, is a person drinking too much alcohol, a person being overweight or obese, a person eating too much salt, a person having a history of high blood pressure and a person who is getting older.
How does one know if they have high blood pressure?
A person cannot really tell whether if they have high blood pressure or not, because there no standard symptoms of high blood pressure and most people won’t find out about the disease until they see a physician for another illness or getting a routine checkup.
If high blood pressure continues without treatment, the heart, brain, eyes and kidneys can be damaged, causing a person to get other conditions like strokes, kidney failure, partial and or total blindness and heart disease. People with very high blood pressure have problems like headaches, nausea, vomiting and problems with vision. This type of blood pressure does require immediate medical attention, which should be sought immediately.
How is blood pressure diagnosed?
Blood pressure is diagnosed when a physician checks a patient’s blood pressure and the patient have blood pressure measuring 140/90 or higher on occasion of three or more times and are measure one to two weeks apart from each occasion.
Of course, there are cases where a person’s blood pressure goes up when they see a doctor and this condition is called white coat hypertension and should not be mistaken for a genuine case of high blood pressure. For in-home monitoring of blood pressure, you should buy (if you already do not have) a blood pressure monitor to check your blood pressure regularly and see whether you have a case of standard high blood pressure or high blood pressure being induced by physical and /or strenuous activities.
How can high blood pressure be treated?
Depending on how high a person’s blood pressure is, the treatment options vary and only a physician can determine the level of treatment a person with high blood pressure may need. If a person with high blood pressure has other diseases, such as diabetes or liver cancer, the treatment may be more intense and costly and require more care to one’s self during the treatment.
Just by a person changing their diet and exercising habits, they can reduce the risk for high blood pressure or eliminate high blood pressure altogether. If this option does not reduce the high blood pressure, one can obtain prescription drugs to lower the blood pressure. Make sure you talk to your doctor about the best types of blood pressure medication and its side effects, before being placed on a drug, since people with certain allergic reactions to medication or other complications, are at risk of getting more complications, if they take certain prescriptions.
The best and healthy way to reduce high blood pressure is to exercise regularly, lose weight, drink very little alcohol a day and eat plenty of healthy foods and this goes well with any medications you are taking for this condition. It is your heart and you should take care of it before it is too late.
