It is not always necessary to rush to the hospital or take some over-the-counter drug every time you sneeze or cough. There are myriad herbal remedies with the same amount of effectiveness as conventional drugs. Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea)

This is proven effective for mild to moderate depression. It is also helpful in diseases like bronchitis, headaches, abscesses, swelling and nerve damage. However, it is known to cause headaches, high blood pressure and digestive upset.

Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis)
This one is a powerful antibiotic. It works its way to the blood and eliminates infection. It helps liver recovery and like ginger, it makes other herbs more effective. However, it may cause an upset stomach and if taken in large doses it can be poisonous.
Cure for insomnia and nervousness
Hawthorn (Crataegus oxycantha)
It is good for insomniacs and for treating nervousness. If used regularly it can strengthen the heart muscles. It is most effective in the long term.
Hops (Humulus lupulus)
This one is a sedative. It also detoxifies your body.
Cure for memory loss
Ginkgo biloba
This enables the opening of smaller veins and hence improves blood circulation, especially to the brain and heart. This improves memory and mental clarity. If taken in excess, it can cause headaches, seizures, irritability, restlessness, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.
Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica)
This is a great mental stimulant. This herb can prevent a nervous breakdown. Basically, it helps in mental fatigue. It also helps to protect against toxins. It can cause some people to become oversensitive to sunlight. If taken in excess it can cause skin rash, headaches or nausea.
Cure for stress and sexual desire
Ginseng (Pana quinquefolia)
This herb is a stimulant and it helps the body to overcome all forms of illnesses, mental and physical. It lowers blood pressure, increases endurance and stimulates sexual desire. However, it has some side effects like headaches, insomnia, anxiety, skin rashes, asthma attacks, heart palpitations to name a few.
