Henna, which was previously known as heena, is an art form that has become very famous over the centuries. Apart from India, this is an art form that is famous in many other countries like Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, Syria, Morocco and Yemen.
This art form is more popularly known as mehndi in countries all over Asia especially India. It is worn out of personal interest, for religious as well as personal functions like weddings. It also has certain medicinal properties and can also be used for healing.
Globalization has opened the doors of many countries both for trade as well as culture. The practice of applying henna has also reached many more countries along with this trend of globalization. Many celebrities who are in Europe as well as USA that include artists, actors, models, singers, pop stars and musicians like to apply henna in very traditional designs. They keep looking for good artists who can apply henna.
There is no definite pattern or design to apply henna. But many designs have become popular over the years. One popular design is that of a leaf which has a chessboard pattern drawn inside it. Another popular design is that of a peacock which has a sharp beak that is curved and it also has a crown of feathers on its head. Some people prefer the design of a creeper that flowers and leaves drawn around it and extends from the base of the palm to the ends of the fingers. This does not cover the palm of the hand completely.
Apart from a fashion statement, henna also has some medicinal value. It helps to soothe the skin and it can also be used to color and condition the hair. Henna is extracted from a plant named lawsonia Inermis that grows in countries like Pakistan, Morocco, Iran, Tanzania, Uganda, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Syria, Eritrea, Yemen, Egypt, India, Kenya, and Senegal. This plant is also known by other names like Al-Khanna, Henne, Egyptian Privet, Smooth Lawsonia Mignonette and Jamaica.
