Heartburn in pregnancy
Heartburn is felt by many women during their first time in pregnancy. Even though this is not a serious problem, it brings in discomfort during pregnancy times. Gastroesophageal reflux is often called as heartburn, even though this problem has nothing to do with the heart.
Heartburn may be caused because of indigestion of food which may contain acid that is pushed up toward the oesophagus. This may cause the burning feeling behind the breast bone. Heartburn also may cause sour taste in mouth and may induce vomiting sensation also.
Some of the reasons causing heartburn problems are eating fatty foods, chocolates, caffeine, onions, spicy foods and certain medicines as well. Heartburn problem can be avoided or solved by some of the basic tips given below.
Eat small meals – Instead of three big meals in a day, five of six smaller meals can be taken in a day. Bigger meals will be stuffing the stomach and will take time for digestion. Regular small meals in a day will keep the metabolism high and help in easier digestion as well.
Drink less while eating – While eating, fewer fluids should be drunk. Instead the fluids can be taken in between while eating.
Avoid spicy foods – Spicy foods with more onions and garlic and other spices can be avoided during pregnancy times. Fatty foods and chocolates can also cause heartburn if they are taken very often.
Avoid lying down after eating – You can do some little housework or go for a walk after eating, which can help in digestion. After a meal, you should not lie down immediately.
Reduce weight – Over weight may also give heartburn problems sometimes. Minimal exercises can be done three times in a week. Proper diet can be maintained to avoid gaining weight.
Comfortable clothing – Avoid wearing tight clothes which put pressure on the stomach and abdomen. Wear light clothes which are comfortable at the time of pregnancy.
