Heartburn and Your Diet
Heartburn is a condition that happens when you feel a painful sensation in the chest area, coupled by a feeling of an upset stomach and having a bitter taste.
Apart from heartburn, we know it as acid reflux disease or gastro-esophageal reflux disease or GERD. When the acid enters the esophagus, it results in the inflammation of the esophagus and this causes discomfort.
The food that you eat triggers heartburn. You will know when a certain type of food can cause heartburn, when you try eating it and it triggers the heartburn.
This is a trial and error process, by which you can eliminate the food that causes it. However, this requires a lot of time, as well as risk, for you are putting yourself in the situation and this means that you are prepared to suffer the consequence of the trial and error process.
Generally, there are certain types of food or drinks that cause heartburn. These include soda or carbonated drinks, alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, and seasonings.
Carbonated drinks in can or in bottles definitely cause heartburn and some other illnesses. Besides that, these drinks do not help you in your weight loss efforts, if you are into reducing weight.
Wine, beer and alcoholic beverages also trigger heartburn. So avoid drinking too much alcohol. It is not good for your general health, anyway.
It is hard to resist eating chocolates, but they can also cause heartburn. This is because it is difficult to digest them. This contributes to the upset stomach feeling that goes with the heartburn.
Citrus fruits, tomatoes and mustard contain too much acids and you need to minimize, if not avoid, eating such foods. Lastly, strong seasoning as well as mint and spicy foods also cause heartburn.
Knowing what kind of foods trigger heartburn is important, so that you can prevent them from causing problems to your health. The risk of a serious condition may not be high, but the pain that goes with it may be something that you do not want to experience. It will definitely affect your activities, as well as your energy level. Always eat healthy food and your general health will be fine.
