Healthy Summer Fruits and Vegetables

Seasonal fruits and vegetables are a delight. Summer is the best time to stuff yourself with some good fruits and vegetables, which makes you healthier. Summer fruits and vegetables are available only for a short period, so make much use of them.

Seasonal fruits and vegetables are considered to be good because they are produced locally and picked fresh, they are not transported over a long period of time and as such they are healthy.

A list of fruits and vegetables to keep you healthy in summer:

FRUITS:

Blueberries: Sweet enough to eat raw. They boost brain power. Can be used in pancakes, cakes or spooned over ice-cream.

Cherries: Rich in vitamins. If sweet, can be eaten raw, and sharper varieties need to be cooked. They can be used in tarts, pancakes and added to fruit salads.

Raspberries: Very tasty and high in antioxidants. Can be eaten raw, or mixed with other summer fruits in fruit salads.

Some other summer fruits are apricots, blackberries, gooseberries, plums, loganberries, strawberries, red currents, white currents and black currents.

VEGETABLES:

Basil: Good for stress, asthma and diabetes. It also contains anti-aging antioxidants and anti-cancer properties.

Beet: A good fever reliever and laxative. They taste good if steamed and served in salads.

Broccoli: Rich in vitamin C, vitamin B9 and vitamin B6. It can be cut into florets, cooked and eaten and it also makes excellent soup.

Spinach
: Spinach is very nutritious and rich in vitamin A, carotene, vitamin C and vitamin K. Wash and cut tender leaves, steam and use in salads, omelets or curries.

Zucchini: Contains vitamin A and is low in calories.

Cucumber: a very cooling vegetable to beat the summer heat. Can be used in salads or mixed with yoghurt.

Some other summer vegetables are asparagus, egg plant, broad beans, carrots, cauliflower, celery, lettuce, peas, potatoes, radish and tomatoes.

Fruits and vegetables are available all through the year, but you don’t know how long ago they were picked and how fresh they are. So always go for seasonal fruits and vegetables, preferably locally produced, according to the seasons they are available.

Buy summer fruits and vegetables fresh every day and don’t think you can have too much.
