Head Turning All Season Hats For Women
July 11, 2008
Basically, headcovering worn to protect one against the elements, women’s hats are much more than that. Whether, winter hats or summer hats, hats have evolved into fashion accessories, turned into style statements by many famous stars and celebrities. In the past, hats were an indicator of social status, while the military still uses them to denote rank and regiment. Traditionally, hats were for men while women were expected to keep their heads warm by covering them with scarves, hoods and veils.
It was only in the late 17th century that women’s hats began to acquire their own distinctive style, no doubt greatly influenced by men’s hats and were seen as prestige symbols, signifying the social status of a lady. Queen Elizabeth II, Jackie Kennedy, and the late Princess Diana, some famous hat wearers wore them regularly, while the latter two wore them to express their style individuality.
Hats can be worn all year round, as well as, to complement one’s dress, hats are made from leather, straw, felt, canvas, wool and fur. There are many types of hat styles, such as, the felt trilbies and fedoras, cloth or straw bonnets, conical hats with tapering crowns that are a popular fashion accessory for those who are exposed to sun rays for long hours. Last but not least, there are Panama hats made from the young, fresh leaves of the panama hat palm.
Over the years, women’s hats have undergone a lot of changes in style, and materials used. World War I saw a decline in the use of hats, with elaborate styles frowned upon. Gradually, hats came to be known as accessories associated with the upper classes. There was a revival of hats in 1980s, due to patronage of women for the royal families, who wore them as fashion accessories.
If, you are also a hat aficionado, keep three things in mind when choosing a hat i.e. comfort, colour and contour. The hat should sit comfortably on your head and should complement your outfit rather than contrast shockingly. The colour of the hat should flatter your sink tone, which means black hats are best avoided if you have dark skin. Tall women should not go for hats with tall crows, just as short women should choose hats with upturned brims to give an impression of height. Small, dainty hats which hug the head look good on a small face, while women with big faces should avoid hats with tapering crowns.
The shape of the face also determines the hat one should go for e.g. soft crowns, asymmetrical trimmings, brimless hats offset oval faces, while soft crowns, hats with the brim slightly upturned / rolled up on one side, hats with asymmetrical trimmings are best for round faces. Square faces should go in for semi-soft crowns and hats with drooping brims, while a heart-shape or triangular face look good in soft crowns, drooping brims, fluffy trimmings.
Worthy investments, hats should be looked after and stored in a cool, dry place or in hat boxes. Keep your hats clean by brushing with a hat brush and if too dirty, take them to a professional hat cleaner. If, you get caught in a shower and your hat gets wet, let it dry naturally rather than blowing it dry. Part of women’s accessories, from famous hat designs, such as, Beanies, Berets, Cloches, Fedoras, Bretons, Swingers, Straw Hats, Fur Hats, Hoods, wear your hat you’re your customary verve and panache!
