Head Lice
March 5, 2009
Pediculus Humanus capitus or head louse is a very common problem among children as well as infants in spite of regular hair washes and good hygiene. Head lice are tiny brown and grey parasites that live on the heads of people and feed on their blood.
They are found on hair-covered parts of the body and cannot survive without blood. Children mostly between the ages of four and sixteen frequently are infested by head lice because they play with other children who already have them, or by sharing combs or caps of a person having head lice.
An itchy and scratchy sensation on the surface of the head is the first signal of head lice. Regular itching can make the scalp sore and sometimes it could turn red due to the constant scratching. Combs, brushes and head towels should be washed regularly in hot water and children’s eyes should be covered while treating head lice.
Treatment at home
Head lice can be treated at home. Massage the hair with olive oil at night and wash it off the next morning. Then apply undiluted white vinegar on the head and wash it after five minutes and repeat this routine every night for four nights. Then run a comb through the hair to check if any head lice are remaining. Another way to get rid of head louse is by mixing 2 ounces of vegetable oil, 20 drops of tea tree oil and 10 drops of rosemary essential oil, lavender essential oil and lemon essential oil.
These ingredients should be mixed well and tested for sensitivity on the skin. It should then be applied well on dry hair and left for 2-3 hours and washed after that. Juniper berries mixed with cider vinegar, and baby oil can be massaged into the head. The head should be covered, you can make the child wear a shower cap and after leaving it on for one hour, you can shampoo it off.
Vaseline treatment
Apply Vaseline on the head, cover with a cap and leave it on overnight. Use peanut butter to remove the Vaseline next morning. Vaseline helps to suffocate the eggs and head lice but it requires six washes to remove the Vaseline. Corn flour or plain flour can also be applied on the hair to remove head lice.
Mayonnaise treatment
Mayonnaise should be applied all over the head and left for at least an hour and then washed away. Then all the lice and nits can be removed using a fine-toothed comb.
Camphophenec treatment
Pour Camphophenec on the head and leave it on through the night and cover the head with a shower cap. All the head lice will be on the cap the next morning and the hair can then be washed and conditioned.
Shaving cream treatment
Shaving cream along with a coat of foam should be applied on the hair for half an hour and then removed. This will help to kill the lice as well as the eggs.
The above-mentioned treatments might have to be repeated a few times in order to kill all the lice and the eggs.
