Human physical appearance has long been considered a contributing factor in most aspects of human life. HORMONAL CHANGE
The hormonal change that is the cause of balding, results from the accumulation of dihydrotestosterone (DHA), a form of testosterone, which is converted to its state by 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme produced in the prostate, scalp and adrenal glands.
BIOCHEMISTRY
Accumulation of DHA results in the death of hair follicles, and thus the weakening of hair growth. It is therefore important to control DHA production, in order to control the process of balding. To do so, finasteride, a synthetic antiandrogen is used to inhibit 5-alpha reductase, and limit the conversion of testosterone to DHA.
BRAND NAME
Finasteride, traded as Propecia by Merk & Co., is the most popular and effective commercially available, FDA approved treatment for male pattern baldness. It has been proven effective for the condition, with an eighty percent success rate, within a three to six month period. However, it suppresses the production of DHA only as long as it is taken, thus it is effective only as long as it is taken. Hair loss reoccurs within one year of ceasing treatment.
ADMINISTRATION
Propecia is administered orally in tablet form, on an empty stomach, in a recommended daily dosage of one milligram, although physicians may recommend increases or decreases in dosage based on health, age, and progression of the condition.
CAUTIONS
Although rare, the drug displays minor, temporary, and curable side effects, such as breathing difficulties, and swelling. The drug is not recommended for those who suffer with kidney and liver diseases. In all cases, persons who wish to commence Propencia treatment are advised to consult their physicians.
Male pattern baldness is common, especially among aging men, yet it is often occurs along with shame, and damaged self-image. Men now have an effective treatment that works with the body’s chemistry to inhibit the enzymatic reaction, which converts testosterone into DHA, and thus causes male pattern baldness.
